Reading waits

For quite a while now, I've been playing and avoided losing by using some simple tactics like:

-discarding terminals first
-then winds unless it is my wind tile or the wind tile of the round
-keeping honors either to get an easy yaku or as a safe tile for the later rounds
-dealing a tile that was just played
-memory. i can recall situations that happened before and play accordingly

but when I run out of safe tiles near the end, I end up dealing in a lot so I want to become good at reading waits. I've pretty much read all of the articles on this topic posted here before but those don't help me at all. Any tips, simplified wait reading, etc?

The 1, 4 ,7 - 2, 5, 8 - 3, 6, 9 trick doesn't help that much.

Waits can't be read. Real mahjong isn't Ten.

This is how to defend. The suji are helpful - this table tells how much.

Are you trying to say I will never execute godly plays like Akagi?!

;_;

So there's really no way to guess what your opponent is waiting on by reading their discards? I'm not good with defense at all and I'm not good at memorizing those charts. When I play, I just look for the least dangerous tile to play. I think what I'm looking for is a good way to figure out what the best tile to discard...I'm not sure.

That's exactly how it works. The chart simply tells what is the safest tile. When playing pure defense, that is typically enough.

There's two parts to defending: deciding to defend and defending well. Where are you having trouble: finding what is the safest tile, or discarding the safest tile despite it being very useful for your hand?

I guess I'll just use the chart haha.

Especially when it can be used to trap someone. 8) :twisted:

But here's an article to potential discarding that should help:

(If only I listen to that advice more often...) :lol:
