Nan, I think. You guys know I'm not the greatest player around here, but this is shaping to mentanpin (Slow, I know) or ikkutsukan, or (long shot) sanshoku. Now let's see why I am wrong.

Also South. I have more potential sets than I need and the least useful is definitely the no-value pair.

Well, I voted south, but then realized discarding
doesn't lower the... uke-ire?... of the hand, right? If you discard south then you lose

shape. So after thinking about it more, I'd discard the 8 (rather than 9, since 9 might be useful as a safe tile later).

Expendable. Having 2 pairs in the hand? Eh, OK. Better to just have one, and might as well pick the 5-sou pair for that purpose. Of course, that would mean forcing the hand. There's a decent chance to get Ittsu (or even Sanshoku) here, so might as well try - at least. If that doesn't work, then a nice simple Pinfu can salvage the whole thing -- maybe.
