Cats don't do タンヤオ (tan-yao) but タニャーオ (ta-nya-o).

Nan, I think. You guys know I'm not the greatest player around here, but this is shaping to mentanpin (Slow, I know) or ikkutsukan, or (long shot) sanshoku. Now let's see why I am wrong.

Also South. I have more potential sets than I need and the least useful is definitely the no-value pair.

Well, I voted south, but then realized discarding doesn't lower the... uke-ire?... of the hand, right? If you discard south then you lose and waits. If you discard then the wait for is still covered by the shape. So after thinking about it more, I'd discard the 8 (rather than 9, since 9 might be useful as a safe tile later).

I agree with the or .
I'd probably go for a because I'm short-sighted and don't plan safe tiles...

Expendable. Having 2 pairs in the hand? Eh, OK. Better to just have one, and might as well pick the 5-sou pair for that purpose. Of course, that would mean forcing the hand. There's a decent chance to get Ittsu (or even Sanshoku) here, so might as well try - at least. If that doesn't work, then a nice simple Pinfu can salvage the whole thing -- maybe.
