I'll probably get some criticism for this strategy, but I might start by throwing the 9-bam

I want to try to develop the red fives, and to do that it would be nice to be able to call discards and speed the hand up. For that, the fastest yaku is tanyao, which with just that alone is approaching mangan.

That aside, if I can keep the hand closed and develop a nice suited run with many outs, tanyao 2-dora riichi pinfu... starts to add up to a nice hand.

As things progress I'll keep an eye out for other yaku like sanshoku doujun, etc and maybe I'll get lucky with another dora.

The night is young.

:D

I choose 3p. One taatsu has to go at some point, and the 35p the weakest. It leaves open the possibilities of pinfu+1 or 2 dora and pinfu + 567 sanshoku + dora 3. Pinfu + 678 sanshoku is also technically possible. And if nines are drawn and the red fives discarded, the possibility of Junchan Sanshoku opens.

Question: When you get a hand like this one, do you decide immediately that you are going to keep it closed or are there any discards that you would claim and open it up. For example, 789 san shoku is pretty close so if the 9-crak or 9-dot were to be tossed here, as they tend to be early in the hand, do you call, or let them pass?

riichi pinfu dora dora is prioritised over unconfirmed sanshoku.

I will discard 8-dot to secure the aka 5p without losing any tile efficiency.

I guess that answers my question. (let them pass! Don't open the hand!)

I can see why you would toss the 8-dot , that would leave you with

5-crak-red 7-crak 8-crak 3-dot 5-dot-red 7-dot 2-bam 3-bam 6-bam 7-bam 8-bam 9-bam 9-bam

Is the next one to go the 8-crak , in order to secure the other red 5, and push towards pinfu with these 4-dot 6-dot....1-bam 4-bam... 6-crak

What if you draw the 9-crak instead? Or even the 9-bam ? (keep them?, ignore them?, toss the red 5 crack? abandon pinfu?, abandon dora dora?)

So many possibilities, so little time.

It would seem like the 3-dot might be a better discard than the 8-dot , perhaps if only to keep some of the other doors open, at least for a while.

Thanks for your input (and the mental stimulation).

I don't understand the discard of 3-dot at all. It makes your shape worse off and halve the chance of using the red 5.

789 sanshoku is way too far. I actually think aiming for 567 sanshoku is closer and 5-bam is dora.

If I draw 9-crak i will discard red 5-crak.

Discard 9-bam is bad because it doesn't get you closer to sanshoku simply because it is highly likely that the formation of another pair destroy your sanshoku again.

Add on:

The reason why this hand shouldn't give a crap to 789 ssk is because it requires 2 of the 9s. Similarly, I can hope for 2 of the 6s to get the equivalent of 2han.
