Question about the Nintendo Yakuman New Ivory set

Post by tyblazitar » Sat Jul 11, 2009 6:17 am

I recently bought one of these beautiful sets, and when I came home, I discovered that it had two red 5ps, but no red fives of the other suits. Also, it had two additional white dragons. Any idea why they didn\'t instead include enough red fives for the set to be playable with red fives?

Also, one of the reasons I bought a fancy set in Japan was that I wanted to play with red fives, and I have seen pictures of older Nintendo Yakuman sets that have them. Any idea if these tiles could be used together with New Ivory, and eventually if there\'s anywhere I could get a hold of single tiles from these sets?

The reason may be that it was manufactured before the use of red fives became popular.
Maybe.

The reason actually seems to be that Nintendo stopped producing this set. It used to have 4 x Red Fives, then suddenly sets appeared with 2 Red Coins and SIX White Dragons. Now, you can\'t get the tiles from Nintendo any more.

However, a set called \"Shinzoge Janbo\" (New Ivory Jumbo) appeared on the market. The tiles are EXACTLY the same as the old Nintendo set, and complete with 4 x Red Fives. The only difference is the mahjong case, the label (Shinzoge Janbo, not Nintendo), and some of the accessories (you now get 4 x yakitori tiles thrown in). At first I supposed Nintendo had sold the licence... BUT BUT BUT now these sets seem quite hard to come by as well.

You won\'t find single Red Fives in this style on the market.

Awh, well, thanks for your help! I think the price I would have to pay for one of these sets is a bit more than what I can afford as a poor student, so I guess I\'ll have to get creative.

There is one Japanese site that makes custom tiles:
