What I would like to see at the shop sites description of the sets is the weight of a single tile. Since these have different weights which is also an indicator of \"value\" of a set to me. It\'s like with Poker Chips. The feeling of their weight does add a nice attribute to the game.

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
Gg, that is a very fair review of the Take set so I gave you some \"karma\"!
* The 3 x dice in the Take set are actually bigger (and lower quality) than standard Japanese mj dice, which are indeed very small.
* I agree with the comment that the Sango set, although cheaper, is actually a better quality SET overall. HOWEVER, the tiles in both sets are good quality, so it comes down to the specifications you are looking for.
Take tiles are flatter across the back, so good for wall stacking! The designs on the tile faces are bolder.
* Good quality mj tiles do not have a bad plasticy smell. That is another key sign of quality.
Cheers!

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
Thanks DH! Since my wife and I are seniors, bolder designs are favorable as they are easier on the eyes. After at least 60 hands, it has become very easy to construct the walls and I have no buyer\'s remorse whatsoever.hirohurl wrote:Gg, that is a very fair review of the Take set so I gave you some "karma"!

Good to know. The Take tiles are very good and easy to read.

I know, and I am not worthy of any rank but the lowest on this incredible website! Perhaps a moderator could demote me back to Fresh Reacher where I belong.Barticle wrote:You appear to be passing yourself off as a Junior Reacher now! :laugh:Gamegrunt wrote:5 - 10,000 point sticks (one extra)

Actually I think that \"Junior\" is not an unreasonable title for a novice (and besides, you have to question any system which can make someone an Expert based only on the quantity - rather than the quality - of their posts).
What I meant was that your current title is not entirely consistent with your previous post in this thread. :silly:

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
By the way, did you find a use for these?Gamegrunt wrote:In the lid of the case is a clear, plastic sheet that holds 20 betting chips in four colors. I don\'t know as yet how to use them, but I\'ll learn soon. These are small, poker-style chips that are about 2.5 cm in diameter.
In Jenn\'s book (an English language resource, yay!) she writes that you can use chips to keep track of luck-based bonuses received, like ura dora, kan ura dora and ippatsu which are then worth an extra dollar (say) if you\'re playing for ca$$$h!
You could use them as improvised yakitori markers too, or make up your own house-rule with them of course. :)

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
If playing with sticks, I use the betting chips for dealer continuance counters. Really nice set, except the first time the other red five of dots was clacked on the table, the \"diamond\" fell out, had to glue it back in :P
Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
After two months of ownership...
The problem with the Take Set is that I have no desire to play with the three other Mahjong sets I own - makes me wish I had bought the Take first, but then again, it was a discovery process that brought about the appreciation of Riichi Mahjong, and the small tiles that are popular in Japan.
Mhing - Classical Chinese - Riichi. The third time is a charm

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
That\'s a good idea. I don\'t like the concept of having to (mis)use scoring sticks, especially when the deal passes.WorTeX wrote:If playing with sticks, I use the betting chips for dealer continuance counters.
Excellent use of quotation marks - did make me LOL! :lol:WorTeX wrote:"diamond"
Although I like Gg\'s idea of replacing them with red jewels, I\'m not a fan of the "bling" tiles with inset gems.
I hear that players of Mhing are merciless. :silly:Gamegrunt wrote:Mhing - Classical Chinese - Riichi.
I guess they were all stepping stones in the right direction for you.

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
I don\'t have any plans to start playing in real life but I\'ve started writing a super-mega MJ guide and I want to take my own accompanying photos of authentic Japanese-style tiles so I\'ve just got the Sango set myself.HotelFSR wrote:I also have the Sango set (which is cheaper) which I like a lot better. [...] I was wondering if anyone else had the same impression.
I\'m very happy with the set overall - the tiles are really nice. Smaller than my old set (sorry no micrometer, Gg!) but with that thicker Japanese shape.
The scoring sticks have required a little tidying up and I\'ve replaced the unattractive round-wind marker but those are minor details. Overall it\'s lovely. B)
I got the set along with a bunch of other goodies from Hiroshima\'s finest... http://japanese-mahjong.com/mjgoods.html
I\'d like to publicly thank David for excellent seller service all round, with prompt and comprehensive replies to my queries and speedy delivery (shipped Monday, arrived yesterday - Friday). Many thanks! :)

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
In a way, I wish I had purchased the Sango instead of the Take because of the \"notch\" in the tiles that commemorates the original bone and bamboo sets.
Is the Sango really made in Japan or made in China for the Japanese market?

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
It is a nice little detail, although it\'s a simple rectangle as opposed to a dovetail joint. In fact, David did some photos for me so I can illustrate it...Gamegrunt wrote:In a way, I wish I had purchased the Sango instead of the Take because of the "notch" in the tiles that commemorates the original bone and bamboo sets.

BTW There\'s something incredibly satisfying about holding a quarter of a mahjong set wrapped together into a single flat block of 36 tiles like that. It\'s kinda like having a big slab of mahjong chocolate... :P I was quite reluctant to unwrap them!
I think David commented on this when we were discussing the provenance of your Take? There\'s no indication of the country of origin. Is the Sango really made in Japan or made in China for the Japanese market?
There are some katakana and hiragana characters on the packaging (i.e. specifically Japanese) but of course that doesn\'t mean it wasn\'t made in China for the Japanese market.

Re:My New Take Set - Initial Impressions
The stylized \"notch\" and the butterscotch coloring suggest the traditional bone and bamboo, so it would be somewhat incongruous for the notch to be combined with a different color other than butterscotch. But that is the point: if I were to have another set I\'d like it to be with a different color.
I see so many attractive sets on YouTube, but those are the magnetic type used in the mechanical tables. The lilac color I\'ve seen is lovely.
Thanks for the link to David\'s image of the Sango up close, Barticle. They certainly appear in the pictures to be of comparable quality to the Take.
