Reading Hands on Jan Ryu Mon

Post by HotelFSR » Tue Jun 16, 2009 8:30 pm

First off, everyone should try the site (janryumon.plaync.jp)

It\'s great! Only downside is that it\'s slightly slow paced.

For those of you that have started playing there, I just noticed something- which you may have as well. The game actually highlights dangerous discards for you. It will highlight where your chosen tile may be dangerous according to adjacent hand-discards in the piles of each opponent.

It\'s also very easy to distinguish which discards come from the hand because of the nice animations, making it a great site for working on defense.

I\'ve been busy lately, but I\'ll get around to making some more of those videos soon. Next up is an annotated pro replay and a video about the ins and outs of reading hands- including when not to do it.

yea the game highlights the dora with flashing effects and also displays your waits and wait options when you are in tenpai it\'s really good, and the \"slow\" pace is good i think it\'s a more realistic that way. Also the game does not highlight the dangerous discards instead it highlight adjacent tiles to the one that your mouse is on (so when you move your mouse over a bamboo 2 then the game highlights \'s and 3\'s in the discard piles). I pretty much like the game and play a lot :) i just hope they will put in the replay option and more options for games (without red 5\'s etc etc )

That sounds excellent. I\'ll be on the edge of my seat!

By the way, do you still need a proxy to use Jan Ryu Mon? A lot of people had problems with that before (such as myself) but I could not find a free way to get ahold of a proxy allowing me to deal with that particular problem.

Monadology check the janryumon thread at the online mahjong section there is a link to packetiX vpn which connects you to a japanese hub and gives you a jap IP otherwise there is no way for playing it (there is not really a secure an free proxy that allows programs through it except browsers) And if your ip is not good enough (some foreigner ip\'s are not blocked , reason unknown) then the most effective way is the VPN.

Thank you. I\'m doing so now.

Which pretty much means it highlights dangerous discards if those highlighted adjacent tiles came out of the hand. You can also use it to find Kabe.

Yeah, the slow pace is not bad. The game does spoon feed you a lot though, making it not so good if you want to practice live games (ironically). Probably my favorite thing about Toupaiou (unlike JanRyuMon) is the fact that it wouldn\'t show you what you need to discard for reach tenpai. You could mess up your tenpai if you didn\'t pay attention, etc. On JanRyuMon the doras flash and it tells you when an opponent has benefitted from Kan doras. You don\'t have to pay attention so much.

It already has replays. You just have to go through the site, which is annoying. It\'s in the war record section.

I love that you can see the players sorting the tiles back into the hands. You can figure out some things about their hand if they play using auto-sort, which a lot of players don\'t.

I\'m surprised how many users there are already, and the level seems quite high. You can get a game faster than Tenhou!

The wesite is great too, they have regular WWYD questions with full-board screenshots and discussion.

The flashing dora and kan dora are not really spoiling the player. But the riichi sub options (you can see what type of wait you can go for) is really too much, i found myself playing slower after playing janryumon which was strange at first but then after some games on tenhou i got me regular speed back :D The think that i really like is the hand movements and the not long ago updated bonus that at the ryukyoku ot displays that what the other player who was in tenpai was waiting for. But hell i was lost already when i saw the video of the game so i pretty much got pulled by the visuals :P (black colored tiles option would be appreciated but patches are coming constantly so i still hope it will be implemented.)
