Mahjong musing: pinfu + honitsu

Post by Barticle » Tue Nov 16, 2010 1:43 pm

I was just thinking while I was playing at the weekend that it's technically possible to stack pinfu with a half-flush.

To meet the combined requirements of both yaku you'd need four chows in the same suit and a pair of a non-scoring "guest" wind.

Couldn't find many examples on a quick image search; I guess it's pretty rare because in practice when you're that close to it you're usually gonna go for the full flush instead.

Here's one I found in a blog - combined with riichi, menzen tsumo, dora pair and a rare ryanpeikou to give a sweet sanbaiman hand. 8)

Anyone ever got pinfu and honitsu together, either unintentionally or just for the sake of having done it? Anything in the ol' archive, Kime? ;)

I've never done, nor seen such an unusual hand.

By the way, your link is broken.

Doh! The host must disallow direct linking to an image URL. Thanks guys!

Have now replaced above with a link to the webpage where I found it.

The first person here to make "hon-pin" wins... the eternal admiration of their mahjong peers. ;)

I have, in Nintendo DS, so sadly I have no screenshot this time. Anyway, it was completely unintentional, and I was like "eh?" when I saw pinfu stacked in there as well, as I didn't really need the points; I was just dumbly flushing. I think I may have done it on tenhou, too, but I would have probably taken a screenshot if I did.

Still, I find chii toi - hon itsu to be much prettier. Not only do you get caught in a cool tanki, but it also hurts.

EDIT: Ah, I knew I had this! I ensambled one Pinfu Hon-Itsu (iipeikou) (369 wait) at Janryuumon a few weeks back. Here is the screenshot:

Could have gone for ryanpeikou if I pass on my tsumo, but meh.

True - nice-looking hand, guaranteed mangan and could be waiting on a "safe" honour where two are already on the table.

I did see a video where I don't remember if it was Miyauchi pro or Izumi Yukiko pro, but she ensambled the chii toi hon itsu and reached with an East Wind pair wait, only to have someone else break their East pair and deal in during the same turn. That's some great control.

If archive = my image folder, then yeah. Lol.

I take too many screenshots as I play because I know I will be too lazy to look at the replays which I periodically erase.
