Scoring Question

Post by Russ1409 » Fri Dec 10, 2010 6:24 pm

Greetings everyone;

I'm returning to MJ after a long hiatus....I haven't played since playing Shanghai Dynasty online (and not well) years ago. I am happy to see there is a lot more helpful info out there now. This forum and Barticle's guide and Tom Sloper's FAQs have been invaluable.

I'm playing 4 Winds on my computer, Japanese Modern rules, and East, the dealer, goes out and the game lists the following:
10 concealed
20 winning
2 one chance chow
40 total before han

1 han for ready
1 han for dora

640 total score
+3900 to winner
-3900 to discarder

I am positive this is explained somewhere, but can someone tell me how the 640 is calculated and what it's for? I understand the han, the fu, and how the score of 3900 was calculated, but for the life of me I can't find anywhere that discusses this 640 computation and meaning.

Many thanks!
Russ

I'm sure it's explained in Sloperama and Shanghai Second Dynasty, so I'm a bit surprised you didn't find it.

The score computation is made this way:
a) Round up the number of fu up to the next ten. (e.g. 32 fu becomes 40 fu)
b) Add 2 to the numbrer of han.
c) Double your fu (a) for each han (b).
I.e. c = a x2 x2 x2 ... = a x 2pow(b) ......<- Here is your 640.
d) If the payment goes to East, or from East, double this value. (It's the case here, so we have 640x2 = 1280)
The resulting value may be different for East player and non-East players.
e) If it's a win by tsumo, each player pays his share. If it's a ron, the discarder pays the total.
f) Round up (e) to the next 100. ......<- Here is your 3900.
Note that the final round up comes AFTER summing the payment.

Now to practice: compute the score for a win of the non-East player with 22 fu and 1 han. Do this for a win by tsumo and a win by ron.
(Result is 1100 points for tsumo and 1000 for ron.)

If you have other questions or if my explanations are unclear, feel free to ask

No, that's all very clear, thank you. I am still simply using the scoring charts, so once I had my fu and han figured out, I didn't do the actual computations to get to the 3900.

Since I'll only be playing by computer or online and don't have to score myself, I need to improve my strategy before I worry about computing the score  I just wanted to understand where that number came from and how it affected me :)

Thanks again.

Hi Russ and welcome aboard. :)

Nice to know you're playing again and very good to hear you're finding my guide useful.

Check section 13 there for five pages on scoring.

Bart;

THANK YOU for putting out the whole guide. I printed it out so I can study it while I'm playing. I will also admit that I skipped over the scoring part of it to concentrate on other sections. I knew my answer was in my readings....just lazy I guess.

I'm just glad that I didn't forget to include scoring!

I hope to get a lot of writing done over the "festive" season. I'll be updating the PDF with a few more definitions and anime references; I'll post in my thread on the Dojo board here when it's available. Also need to update my Janline-R guide and I've got another four MJ games to write new guides for. :)

Several folks have commented that they've printed the PDF so I might need to look at adapting it for such use, the obvious step being to add page numbers to the front index (all suggestions welcome). The main problem with hard copy is that the hyperlinks stop working! Maybe I should appeal for a sponsor so that I can provide a free iPad with every copy. :D

Speaking of iPads, this all looks pretty cool - until you start spotting the clues (at least four) that it's been Photoshopped. :P

Out of question - you really deserve your gold membership! But I have to say that I'm a little bit jealous!
