What's the most preferred size for mahjong tiles and do bigger tiles have advantages over smaller tiles or vice versa, except for weight?
I recently ordered a size M mahjong set. I'm actually used to seeing the big Chinese tiles (since I'm Chinese) and already own a 29x22x12mm Chinese set (which are a bit to flat in my opinion)

Re: Tile size
The preferred size seems to depends on the country.
Chinese are said to use big tiles and Japanese small ones.
In France you can find very flat tiles in general games shops, but "real" players don't like them since they are too flat to stand upright.
Big tiles are more steady and readable, and it's harder to conceal them into your pockets.
But too big and too heavy tiles are not very handy either.
With small tiles you need a smaller table to play (quite obvious isn't it?) and it's easier to carry.
As long as they have enough weight and thickness, small tiles stands upright.

Re: Tile size
Ah, I meant if there is any preference in size in Japanese mahjong:

Why are there so many "classified" tile size (S, M, L, 2L, 3L) for Japanese sets?

Re: Tile size
Japanese mahjong tiles are usually made to be used in a dealing machine. Each manufacturer might vary the size of its tiles slightly. But in general, Japanese tiles are not far off from these dimensions:
H = 2.5cm (1")
W = 1.8cm (23/32")
D = 1.6cm (19/32")
This information came from http://www.sloperama.com/mjfaq/types.htm (my site; based on measurements of tiles in my collection).
