Do's and don'ts

Post by Jiazzz » Sun Apr 17, 2011 11:35 pm

I found several do's and don'ts (mainly don'ts) videos on youtube, like this one for in a jansou: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBSNebwrFZI

Discard pool: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pc1cmYjy9mQ
Dead wall and dora indicator: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U05EyZAy3ws
I do not quite understand why it's wrong to first turn the dorahyouji and then putting down the rinshanhai. Is it about bumping the rinshanhai?
Discarding: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzPI4k8MMjE I don't really understand what is shown here...
Wall placement: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rT24RFwOKaE Same with this one, the middle part of the video.

I understand some of them, but I'm not that fluent in Japanese, so could someone provide a translation for all of them?

About end-game
- In case you want to end the game, please announce this is your last hanchan ("rasuhan"). If you're unsure, announce this may be your last one ("moshi rasu").

About smoking
- Please, make sure not to blow smoke on other players at the table.

About staff regulations

I have seen them all actually as they were uploaded (when performing a 麻雀 search in youtube and watching the newest videos that pop up) some time ago, and the one with the mobster still makes me laugh, as it is very accurate. Some people think bad manners make them look so yakuza.

The other ones, if I'm not wrong, are uploaded by taroo. If I'm not mistaken here, he is a strong Houou player at tenhou, friends with Puyo whose articles I'm translating for the site.

So, I translated these videos as well.

Let's learn mahjong manners with video.

Once you discarded a tile in the pond, it doesn't come back to your hand.
The place where you discard tiles is called the pond (hoo/kawa/river).
A tile that has touched the pond cannot go back to your hand.
Even if the tile just slightly touched the mat, it is considered to be discarded.
Even if no one else has seen the tile, you can't put it back in your hand.
Since sliding tiles from within the hand is confusing, let's stop.
There are people who inadvertent place their winning tile next to the pond, but...
Since there are many cases where this is seen as discarding and it won't be acknowledged as a winning hand, let's be careful.
The criteria used generally is generally decided to be behind the elevator (where your wall rises up from).
Since this is behind the elevator, the winning hand is recognized.
Since this is closer to the pond than to the elevator, there are many cases where the winning hand is not recognized.
It would be just a shame since you just managed to win, so let's be careful.

Let's learn mahjong manners with video.

If you have the dora indicator in the wall in front of you, let's place down the rinshan tile.
The rinshan tile is the tile that is taken after a kan.
"Kan"
If you win with the rinshan tile, the "rinshankaihou" yaku is added.
That's why the rinshan tile is considered to be an important tile.
(Good Example) Since the rinshan tile may be knocked down very easily, so that no one may see it, we place it down.
It is dangerous to flip the dora indicator before placing down the rinshan tile.
(Bad Example) If you flip the dora indicator first... just like this, there are cases where by flipping the dora indicator, the rinshan tile falls down.
(Bad Example) Since it is dangerous to flip the dora indicator with the tip of the finger, let's stop.
The way I suggest is
Lowering the rinshan tile at the same time we reveal the dora.
By using the index finger of the left hand as support for stability, we can flip the dora indicator over.
In case a second kan is declared, we lower the rinshan tile as well.

Let's learn mahjong manners with video.

Slamming the tiles against the table is forbidden.
Throwing away one unwanted tile is called "discarding."
"Slamming" the tiles, is discarding them with excessive force.
If you slam the tiles strongly, the may get indented or chipped, also the table may suffer damages.
If you make strong noises, you will scare people and make them feel intimidated
Also, a lot of women dislike the slamming of tiles.
Thinking "I wonder if this person is angry?" you may repel them away.
Let's be especially careful when we play with women. [[this one, I must totally agree with ;)]]
But I feel young women are the ones who like slamming the tiles the most, *laughs*
When we win, strength comes into us suddenly, so let's not slam the tile.
Let's place down the winning tile quietly.

Let's learn mahjong manners with video.

Placing the wall in front of us a little bit forwards.
When we press the button and the wall emerges in front of us,
let's push the wall in front of us a little bit forwards.
Not simply pushing it straight forwards, the right side should be pushed a little bit further.
These are manners so other players can take their tiles more easily.
When all players place their walls like that, it looks like this.
However, if you move them too far away
it becomes difficult for you to discard.
It's okay just pushing it a distance of about one tile away.
Haven't you seen people like this? *breaks wall stupidly* X
They are cut at 6-5-6
This creates blind spots,
since it may cause a wrong tile to be drawn, let's stop.
If the turns passed and the wall became shorter...
if you move it towards the center it is easier to take tiles.
