Hello,
Last week i played in a small tournament and at one stage I had Big Dragons on the table, Pung Green, White and Red.
Then someone at the table decleared Riichi.
My question in this matter "is it wise / smart to declers Riichi at such a stage?
A pity for not collectting the Yakuman because I dealed into his hand and had to pay a Haneman.
The main thing is "would you declare Riichi"?

If it's obvious that someone have a yakuman hand, I'll certainly NOT declare riichi.

And instead -- defend the crap from that Daisangen.

With just this, I can't say there is a universal way of dealing with that situation.

If the player in question did not need to riichi, then I agree that it is a useless move.

If they're not tenpai, folding is recommended... except if pao is the ruleset. I can't remember if it's in the EMA set. Regardless,if it is and you are responsible, push from T-2 (ryanshanten), fold if worse off.

If riichi is necessary for the hand, then by all means do it. It might incite the other two to deal in intentionally, (sashikomi) especially if the wait is semi-obvious. 2600 or even 8000 is a better deal-in than 32k/48k.

When yakuman-class hands are in play, the goal of the game is to stop it, not kvetch about how nice my yakuman hand would look in a photo online. Well,okay,the person gunning for yakuman might, but the other 3 must consider everything from the cheap win to voluntarily losing the hand.

Sashikomi skills are important to maintain position or reduce the loss. I could not win in Copie 2011 without it.

But how do I know to Sashikomi, trying to deal into the other hand.

Per the Pao Rule, Kamicha is already screwed. I was nowhere near tenpai; but at least, two safe tiles are in my possession.

Discard tiles dangerous to the other two players, while playing safe against the yakuman threat. In the above example, I was way to mortified of the Daisangen and forgot about that option.

To take the previous game as an example, 3m would be an ideal candidate to deal in to opponents (shown in this image, with more discards, 4m as well)... the only problem being that Daisangen took shape way too soon to have anyone else in a ready state. Therefore, the potential for sashikomi never existed. You could deal safe tiles from our big winner but, in this situation, it's delaying the inevitable. I would have checked the pao rules if I was at home, but I was thumbing away on my phone.

Never deal the 3rd dragon unless it makes you tenpai. Even then, that means you're playing with a loaded gun with 4 bullets in the chamber.

Here's a fresh example of Sashikomi. Going into Orasu, I'm sitting last, but not by much from 3rd - who happens to be Toimen and Oya.

Shimocha (to my right) has a sizable lead and should have a vested interest in simply ending the game, rather than allowing anyone to score a big hand, or Oya going on a roll. After I made two open calls, Shimocha took viewed that as a sign of me getting to tenpai - and dropped 3-sou. In doing he, he actually takes apart tenpai to deal something dangerous to me, but safe to Kamicha (who called Riichi).

I pushed against Riichi, because I didn't have much of a choice. I'd remain last if I had not done so anyways.
