I'm playing the new PS3 game Mahjong Haoh: Dankyuu Battle 3 which has some (quite literally) colourful rule options.

There are several settings for スーパー牌 (suupaa pai - literally "super tiles"). There are green fives which are worth two Han plus two chips and gold sevens which are worth only one Han but three chips (and the chip value can be set at 2k, 5k or 10k points). These can be used in conjunction with up to six red fives (or red ones and nines) - and a host of other novel rules up to and including 青天井 (aotenjou - "skyrocketing") where the limits system is removed.

In this photo my neighbour has made an interesting (and valuable) set. :)

@.@ Sooo many pretty colours!

I've heard a couple mentions of limit removal systems and there are parlours in Japan that have gold fives. But wow! Green fives and gold sevens? Yet another reason to get a PS3 >< Sounds like a nice bit of fun. You probably need the removal of the limit system just to play with these or you'd be hitting counted Yakumans left right and center.

Do you have the list of all rule options?

I thought you would be interested!

You'll have to wait for my game guide for a full list of the (83!) rules and their settings but I'll list the more exotic highlights here:

bankruptcy penalty
max starting scores 60k each
max Uma 30-60
Tenpai Yame (works like Agari Yame)
2 or 3 Han minimum
Aotenjou
Dai Wareme (x4 multiplier if same number on both dice)
Arisu
Binta
two starting Dora
red 3 / 5 / 1&9
green 5 and gold 7
Haku Pocchi wildcards
double Yakuman for Suu Kantsu
double Yakuman for Tenhou

(I think all of those should be covered to some extent in my PDF guide)

I didn't expect much from the game as it's a budget title but, if you can live without fancy graphics and online play, it's got tons of rules, settings, stats and challenges.

Scores are waaay higher with Aotenjou...

Just got a very nice (very lucky) counted Yakuman, without using any fancy rules.

I declared the Kong after reaching which gave me four Dora, the supplement tile gave me Rinshan Kaihou and San Ankou, then I picked up four Ura Dora. :D

Nice! Reminds me of my only counted Yakuman to date which I got about a month after learning the game. I'd randomly ponned the 7-bam on a whim since it was dora, and closed kanned the 1-dot later revealing a 9-dot indicator. And pulled :south on Haitei to give me both double South and three concealed triplets. So I had Haitei, double south, all triples (toi-toi), three concealed triples, 7 dora (original 3 from the pon, and the 4 from the kan) and my pair was 2 red fives, for a total of 16 Han.

I'm going to have to find this game (and a PS3) just to play with the rules. Particularly inserted in trying aotenjou.

Hey Barticle,
is there any video of Mahjong Haoh: Dankyuu Battle 3 on youtube? I couldn't find one showing game play.
Thanks,
FD

Very nice hand, Matt. Including the Haitei for added drama was a nice touch. :)

My first Yakuman was counted - it's in the "Yakuman Club" thread if you dig back far enough.

Hey FD, good to hear from you.

Even now there's very little info online. I've been checking the maker's website and they still haven't even added a PS3 Mahjong section to their site! Even Amazon Japan and Play Asia haven't got any screenshots up, but Sony themselves have a few here.

I don't think I could pick one - and I haven't played some of them for ages. However I'd highlight Mahjong Fight Club for the overall quality of presentation and content, Janline-R for the online play (this may be dead by now), Mahjong Dream Club for the authentic table view and MH:DB3 for the rule options and single-player modes.

I'm still waiting to see what the first full retail disc mahjong game for the PS4 will be. So far only a download game has been announced I think.

Am I missing something? I'm only seeing 7 dora. 3x2 green fives and the 4-dot

Edit: never mind. Those are the actual dora not the indicators.

I wonder... can you do All Green with a green five?

Heh, I don't think they thought of that!

I must say the green fives are a little confusing when you go for a bams flush.
