Cool, I'll tell it to my friend!
Edit: nice for the waits; I'm not sure he knows this, I'll tell him.
riichi mahjong scoring app

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app
This app is basically a reverse of the one above, if you want to practice calculating how many points a winning hand is worth.
It gives YOU the tenpai hand, what the winning tile was, if it was by ron or tsumo, and whether riichi was involved.
It also shows the dora indicators, the round wind, and the seat wind.
Naturally, it assumes you already know the han value of each yaku and how to total the fu mini-points.
You select your answer from 4 choices and if correct, a yellow circle highlights your answer. (A time limit is optional)
A detailed summary of the correct answer is also provided.
The app (IOS) is called Mahjong Calc Trainer by Satoshi Horiguchi, and it's free.

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app
Found another riichi scoring app on Android. It is very new, I believe, since it only has 100 downloads.
It is called RIICHI MAHJONG MANAGER and is similar to the one discussed a few posts above but with a lot more information, mostly for beginners.
The main menu page is as follows:
The rules overview page is loaded. Besides 5 in-app links, there are 3 external links to popular japanese mahjong internet sites should one desire more detailed information.

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app
The hand calculator is almost identical to the previous one where you enter the winning hand and it displays the han and the fu breakdown along with the final score.
The only problem is the final score is partially cut off, although still readable. I have emailed the developer to possibly correct this if it is a flaw in the app and not dependent on the phone/tablet it is being viewed on. We shall see.

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app
UPDATE: Upon closer examination, I have discovered that the scoring calculator in the above app is flawed. If you use one, stick to the original.
I have notified the developer since he asked for feedback.
Consider the following hand, which the newer app does not consider to be valid.
The original seems correct, including the famous open pinfu 2 fu.

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app
Another scoring app showed up 2 days ago. This one is on IOS as well as Android, and considering that IOS is lacking in this department, it is worth mentioning.
It is called Japanese Mahjong Calculator Girl, the girl part referring to a separate part of the app. In addition to the standard features of entering your winning hand, wind conditions, tsumo or ron, dealer or not, and number of dora, it utilizes the honba count and allows you to have different rulesets, like open tanyao, mangan kiriage, San Renko, Paa Renchan, scoring stick value, rinshan kaihou tsumo, and others.
(In this app, note that you have to enter your winning tile last, not including any open melds)
It is also in English as well as Japanese.

Re: riichi mahjong scoring app
(part 2)
So far, I have not found any flaws with this one. You have to use 5 coins to calculate a hand but you start with over 100 and if you watch a 30 second app video ad, you get 10 coins back free, as many times as you want. I have not had any problems doing this.
(or you can buy them. 400 for $2, 1200 for $5)
In my opinion, this is the best riichi scorer on IOS. (the best one overall is only on android, see Sept 13 post, this thread)
I did notice that open pinfu is scored as 10fu, which is the same as being scored as 2fu since you round it up to 30fu anyway. (20 + 10 is the same as 20 + 2 + 8 )
