Mahjong study methods

Post by Ozball » Thu Nov 07, 2013 1:14 am

So I'm curious, what do people do to study Mahjong and improve their game? I suck at remembering how a hand went after the fact so I have trouble reviewing my games. So I've stuck mostly to problem books, though most of which are in Japanese:
http://tinyurl.com/mnqtmaw (Amazon Japan link, was just very long by itself. 388 characters or something )
This is a pretty handy book as the explanations aren't too hard to understand to my only N3 level Japanese knowledge.

http://tinyurl.com/lp4gvkf is the other one I've used but have struggled with some of the explanations as it uses more complex Japanese and kanji.

I also plan on getting Jenn and Garths book soon as well.

So what's your favourite way to study?

Jenns book would be very helpful sincee its in english lol

But me personally since I self taught my self for the past two years all ive done was study the hands rewrite them understand the context do research on playong styles.. akagi and the legendary gambler tetsuya helped alot (yakuza based mahjong animes how in learned beforei saw saki) and just watching games but paying atyention to draws discards and the "flow" of the game... but thats just me ^^ nevertheless I play every day not just riichi either I play hk kansai wright Patterson and nmjl as well so it gives me a differrnt outlook... but this was within 2 years god I love mahjong xd

If you do get Jenn and Garthe's new book, please let us know your feedback (good and bad!). You can discuss it on the forums as these are checked regularly or you can email me or Jenn.

It's hard to know exactly what the Western market is looking for and what sort of level of strategy discussion is needed, so this first book is testing the waters in a way. It's pretty typical of a lot of study exercises you can get in Japan. It's not an advanced discussion, but more aimed at intermediate players.

Anyway, if we receive feedback, we can cater any further books for what people want/need. And as always, thank you very much for the support :)

Jenn's book is a "how-to-play" affair with a small section on strategy.

http://www.amazon.com/Reach-Mahjong-Jen ... =jenn+barr

(you can get it as a hard copy or as an ebook)

Jenn and Garthe then did a book together and released it a few weeks ago...

http://www.amazon.com/A-Riichi-Mahjong- ... =jenn+barr

Only the ebook is available on amazon, but if you want a hard copy, you can contact me or Jenn and we'll put you down for a pre-order.

Jenn also lurks on the forums, so she'll see any comments you have.

Thank you again :)
