Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
Hi all,
Do you know any shops/websites that sell Japanese Mah Jong mats in Canada/US? I live in Toronto.
I could buy it from Rakuten or ask my friend in Japan to send it here, but EMS costs quite a lot just for a mat, and standard mail just takes too long.
If there is a cheaper and fast way to get it, please let me know!

You can also buy a mat from MahjongMart or Japanese-Games-Shop, but the shipping cost will be the same

Cats don't do タンヤオ (tan-yao) but タニャーオ (ta-nya-o).

It's a bit out there, but have you considered making your own? It might take a bit of effort, but all you need is some felt and basic materials you can get pretty cheap at a hardware store, and you're most of the way there.

Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
Thanks.
That's exactly what I'm going to do. I can find Chinese Mah Jong mats here. This is one is really big.
I will just need to cut it and add edges so pon-ing feels good. lol
It would've been nicer if I could buy it cheap, so that's what I was wondering.

Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
I never saw Japanese mats sold in Canada. I know many players who made one themselves. A Japanese friend brought one for me directly from Japan. Personally, after utilizing one for more than two years, I prefer full table tops. We buy Chinese fold-able tables and remove the legs. There are really cheap (~40 $CDN).
Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
Felt wears pretty quickly. I think it would be better to use worsted wool, like that is used on fine billiard tables. It should wear much better.Rosti wrote:...all you need is some felt...
Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
If you go to a fabric shop and ask for "table protectors", that's usually made of a foamy material on one side. I used to use that before I got meself a mat.
Re: Where to Get Mah Jong Mats
For my first mahjong mat, I went with felt, but it's started to pell and the walls never sat very well on the thick felt. The best advantage of it is a wide cord sewn in to provide it's own boundaries. Useful for organizing your tiles, but i'm thinking it's time for a new mat.
Problem is finding worsted wool/billiard felt at the fabric store. ... "Table Protectors" eh? I'll have to try that.
