SegaMJ App releases in English
Looks like SegaMJ is joining the ranks of english Riichi Mahjong games, with an english translation of their app now available... in some areas. Apparently it's accessible on US Google Play accounts, but currently on my AU one it's listed as not available in my country.
Reports/rumors (ie hearsay) have it that it's still a stripped down version of the Japanese version, and currently only has Tonpuu available. If anyone else gets a chance to give it a shot, let me know how you go! Otherwise, I'm waiting till the AU region gets added I guess.

Re: SegaMJ App releases in English
That's cool, I'll have a look this evening after work.
I think we have to appreciate any efforts to bring Japanese mahjong to international/English markets but it seems that sometimes the price you have to pay is cut content.
It's interesting that this topic should come up just after I started playing the Mahjong Fight Club Sp app. It wasn't until I started poking around on the official Japanese website this week that I learned there's a separate edition for outside Japan and it's missing a ton of modes and features.
Just compare the main menus below!
They didn't even bother re-arranging the menu layout (or translating the Japanese text).
Hopefully this new version of MJ won't be quite that bad... although there are already comments on the mahjong subreddit mentioning several lost features (and poor international availability). Potentially, if there's no crossplay between the Japanese and English versions, they might be limiting the range of modes to improve matchmaking times in smaller regional playerbase/s?
(Just for the record, Sega, I'm still waiting for MJ on any Playstation platform. Eleven years and counting...!

Same here - not available in the UK.

Re: SegaMJ App releases in English
Some reports that it is crossplay, or at least they mentioned that they saw people with profile borders etc that were not feasible in the English version. Again, I haven't confirmed this myself. I think matchmaking will generally be bad outside JP timezones, (which is why I'm baffled that they didn't include Aus in their initial release) so even if crossplay exists, it might still make sense to limit modes for matchmaking purposes.Barticle wrote: ↑Wed Jul 29, 2020 12:17 pm

I'm surprised at the MFC SP feature cut. That's been out for years now.... I would have hoped they'd add to it over time :/ I've played it here and there on occasion.

Wow, finally a mahjong app available in the USA and not in some other countries.
I played offline a few times and liked the game.
However, there are no settings or rules buttons for things you might like to change. It is a simple East round only game with nice graphics and voice animations.

At least one of us can get it! How are the assists?
I've had the Japanese PC version for ages ("Sega" backwards!) but I've wanted a console port since MJ4 was in arcades.

Re: SegaMJ App releases in English
I found one video on Youtube of the new English app.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAWeTy7P1NY
The diverse contextual commentary is pretty impressive but it sounds quite robotic and I can see the novelty wearing off!

I don't know.......because I'm not sure what they are supposed to do.......unless I'm missing something. How are the assists?
Watched that YouTube thing above.
Makes a call out of nowhere and pungs the 1-bams.
Then makes a 567 crak chow.
Can't figure that one out. No yaku. Corny video.

Yes, seems to be a novice player. Their very first move is to discard a red five from 3456m, accompanied by a voice line that was probably "They just increased their Shanten" in the original Japanese in-game commentary.
Seems to be a channel that shares footage of various new mobile games. Their video was the only result that came up on my Youtube search and I just posted it here for people in countries where the game is unavailable (i.e. most countries!) to see and hear the game in action, not as an example of pro strategies.

Speaking of shiny... watch out, Steve - I think you're on the cusp of losing your Silver Surfer status!

Re: SegaMJ App releases in English
Well, that didn't last long. I'm seeing reports tonight that Sega will be suspending the US service.
Re: SegaMJ App releases in English
Hmmm. interesting, I wonder what the cause is. Just not enough players/revenue? Or some regulatory issues?
